We’ve been talking it up for months, and it’s finally here. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has finally premiered. Does it meet our expectations? If you’re a Marvel fan, then yes. If you’re not a Marvel fan... then probably also yes.
Being the pilot episode, there’s necessarily a lot of setup to cover before getting down to the meat of the show. We’re introduced to Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) pretty early on. He’s the former black ops white guy that is necessary in every show involving guns. He’s the typical manly guy, although that convention is suitably upended by Joss and his crew.
Ward is joined by Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), whose past is apparently even murkier than his, as well as the science team of Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), who serve both as light comic relief and as the science magicians necessary to make AoS seem suitable sci-fi. Genius hacker/superhero fangirl Skye (Chloe Bennet), who starts out as a member of some shady online collective, is also in the mix.
Of course, there are familiar faces in the mix as well, representing the old guard of the Marvel Universe iteration of S.H.I.E.L.D. with all the property-linking potential that entails. There’s a cameo appearance for Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill, which was nice, but far more important is the man himself: Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).
